Taft, Computer Reseller News A federal appeals court Wednesday ruled the depositions of Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and several other of the software company's executives will be closed to the press and the public. The three-judge panel ruled in favor of Microsoft in the battle to keep the pretrial depositions private, after attorneys representing news organizations cited an obscure law -- the Publicity in Taking Evidence Act -- that would let observers witness the depositions. Wednesday's ruling reverses last week's decision by U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, who ruled in favor of the news organizations, saying the depositions should be open to the press and the public, in accordance to the 1913 statute.
