Authorities plan far wider use of such scanning technology as soon
as enough equipment is ready.

One pilot project is being readied in Rotterdam, where 250 asylum
seekers have agreed to participate in a pilot program that will
imprint their iris codes to their passports approximately two years
from now.

Initially, citizens from 18 European countries are eligible to enroll in
what the Schiphol airport is calling the Privium program. For $90,
they will receive an iris-scan card good for four years and other
privileges, like faster check-ins and speedier screening of hand
luggage. The service may be extended to travelers from outside
Europe in a year.
