Die griechische Datenschutzbehörde hat Vodafone Hellas erstinstanzlich mit 76 Millionen Euro Bußgeld abgestraft. GrunD: Fahrlässiger Umgang mit der ETSI-Überwachungsschnittstelle, Equipment: Ericsson. In Folge wurden der Ministerpräsident und praktisch die gesamte Regierung ein Jahr lang abgehört. Ach ja, und einen Toten gab es dabei auch. Ein leitender Techniker von Vodafone.gr hat sich erhängt.

Der Überwachungsskandal in Griechenland - vom Ministerpräsidenten abwärts wurden die Handys der gesamten Regierung monatelang abgehört - hat seinen Ursprung in den ETSI-Interfaces. Es ist der erste bekannt gewordene Fall von Missbrauch dieser genormten Überwachungsschnittstellen durch Nachrichtendienste, benutzt wurde ein von Vodafone implementiertes Interception Management System der Firma Ericsson.

This doqument marked "strictly confidental" describes the usage of Ericsson's Interception Management System, a voluminous hardware/software set-up. Ericsson IMS was abused by yet unkown secret service agents to spy on top Greek government officials including the Greek prime minister.

So einfach durchgewunken wurde sie auch wieder nicht im Rat, die beabsichtigte Direktive. Volkswagen, Daimler-Chrysler, Siemens, Microsoft, Nokia, Sony/Ericsson et al. sind in Europa Namen, die dahinterstehen. Öffentlich sind die genannten Produzenten - allesamt Software/spezialisten - wenig sichtbar für ihr Vorhaben aufgetreten.

A collection of network monitoring and datamining suites made by Nokia Siemens, Ericsson, Verint and others. All systems are compliant to ETSI and CALEA "lawful interception" standards, the vendors themselves are involved in the standardization. While the official name of the game is still "lawful interception" the newer suites also perform "high speed government surveillance". From Iran to China they are ab/used to track down the democratic opposition, dissidents, ethnic and religious minorities. The vendors are mostly European and US companies.
